South River High School opened its doors in 1978. It quickly became a cornerstone of the community, serving students from Edgewater, Mayo, Davidsonville, Riva, and parts of Harwood. The school’s origin story is rooted in necessity. Arundel High School and Southern High School were overflowing. South River High School emerged as the solution. It’s grown significantly since then, now educating over 1,600 students. South River High School boasts a robust academic program, even earning a prestigious Blue Ribbon award. In 2013, Newsweek recognized South River High School as one of Maryland’s top 30 high schools and among the top 1,000 nationwide. The school’s STEM magnet program, launched in 2009, attracts students from across Anne Arundel County. This program is one of only two in the county, sharing the honor with North County High School in Glen Burnie. Beyond academics, South River High School excels in athletics. The Seahawks compete in Maryland’s 3A subdivision. Their trophy case gleams with state championships. Recent victories include the 2023 soccer championship. The field hockey team holds titles from 2001, 2004, 2016, and 2017. The baseball team clinched their first-ever state championship in 2013. The wrestling team celebrated regional championships in 2017, 2022, and 2023. The men’s lacrosse team boasts state championships in 2009, 2012, and 2014. South River High School’s history isn’t without its challenges. In 2010, a football player’s serious back injury during practice led to the coach’s suspension. This incident sparked controversy. Ultimately, the coach resigned but later returned, even earning the title of Baltimore Ravens High School Coach of the Week in 2021. In 2018, an assault in a bathroom resulted in charges for several students. This incident highlighted the importance of school safety.
