Imagine this prestigious institution nestled at the foot of Table Mountain. That is the South African College Schools, also known as SACS. Established in 1829, SACS stands as the oldest continuously running school in South Africa.

SACS has a rich history. Its origins trace back to 1791. Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist sought to improve Cape education. Later, Lord Charles Henry Somerset authorized the use of funds to establish the South African College in 1814. The inauguration took place on October 1, 1829. Initially, classes were held in the Weeshuis on Long Street. In 1841, the school relocated to the Egyptian Building.

In 1874, a decision was made to separate younger students from older ones. This led to the establishment of the College which became the University of Cape Town and the College School. The College School then moved to Orange Street in 1896. Due to growth, SACS relocated to the Montebello Estate in Newlands in 1959. This estate was once the home of Sir Max Michaelis.

SACS is not just about history. It is also about opportunity. Cecil John Rhodes designated SACS as one of four schools to offer an annual Rhodes Scholarship. This scholarship allows a graduating student to study at the University of Oxford.

The school buildings are located on Dean Street and Newlands Avenue. The Junior School on Dean Street has sports fields and a swimming pool. The High School near Newlands Avenue also offers various sports facilities. These include a heated swimming pool for water polo.

SACS provides a wide array of sports and clubs. Boys participate in main summer and winter sports. There are clubs like the History Society, Marimba Band, and Debating Society. The school also boasts a rich cultural scene with music ensembles and societies.

The uniform has evolved over time. Navy blue became the traditional color in the 1880s. Today, the High School uniform includes khaki shorts in summer and charcoal trousers in winter. The Junior School uniform features charcoal shorts and a similar tie to the High School.

Many notable individuals have passed through SACS’s halls. Alumni include Dr Abdullah Abdurahman, a leader and human rights campaigner and Captain Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor, a war hero. Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr, a former Deputy Prime Minister, also attended SACS. The school has produced leaders in various fields.

SACS’s motto, “Spectemur agendo”, meaning “Let us be judged by our deeds,” encapsulates its commitment to excellence. From its historic roots to its modern facilities and diverse programs, SACS continues to shape young minds and inspire future leaders. SACS stands as a testament to its enduring legacy.
