Sophumelela High School has seen its share of challenges. In 2019, the school’s pass rate dipped below 70%, a benchmark set by the Western Cape Department of Education. This marked the first time in a decade that the school had fallen below this mark. Principal Mzimasi Hoho refused to let this define Sophumelela High School. He and his staff saw it not as a stigma, but as a challenge.
The school serves a community facing high unemployment, crime, drug abuse, and teenage pregnancy. Many learners come from child-headed homes. The COVID-19 pandemic added another layer of complexity. Yet, Sophumelela High School thrived. In 2020, the pass rate rebounded to 72.6%. This was an increase of 3% and 23 learners. Even more remarkable was the quality of these passes. 56% of the passing learners achieved bachelor passes, a 15% increase from 2019.
Sophumelela High School recorded 14 distinctions in gateway subjects like mathematics and physical sciences. There were also 10 distinctions in life sciences, a notoriously challenging subject. One learner even achieved seven distinctions, including a perfect score in physics. This marked the second year in a row a Sophumelela High School student achieved this feat. Two Sophumelela High School learners were among the top 40 achievers in the province in the 2020 WCED awards. This was a historic milestone for the school.
Mr. Hoho credits this success to the learners’ openness to learning and teaching. He also praises the commitment of his teachers. They sacrificed their time, money, and energy to support their students through the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. Sophumelela High School’s story is a story of triumph over adversity. It’s a reminder that even in the face of immense challenges, education can empower and uplift.
