From St Francis Xavier’s vision to today’s global hub that is Sophia University. What a journey!

Sophia University stands proudly in Tokyo. Its history stretches back centuries. It began with a dream. St Francis Xavier hoped to establish a university in Japan. His wish lay dormant for centuries. Then in 1913 Jesuit priests fulfilled that dream. Sophia University opened its doors. Three departments started things: German Literature Philosophy and Commerce.

The early years were challenging. A small group of students refused to salute at Yasukuni Shrine. This act went against their religious beliefs. The incident damaged the university’s reputation. However the university persevered. The Archbishop of Tokyo intervened. He allowed Catholic students to salute. Many students and even the president participated in the rites at Yasukuni.

Over time Sophia University grew. It added more departments. More students came from Japan and around the world. An exchange program with Georgetown University started early on in 1935. Sophia also established a junior college in 1973 and a community college in 1976.

The university expanded its global reach. It now boasts partnerships with hundreds of universities across the globe. Many students study abroad. They experience different cultures and languages. They develop international perspectives.

Sophia University is not just academics. It hosts a vibrant student life. The Sophia Festival is a highlight. It features student competitions and events. Many clubs and organizations flourish. Sports are a big part of life there too. The university participates in athletic tournaments. They even have their own American football team the Golden Eagles. They practice at the Sanadabori field. It’s a public field so it’s used by others on weekends.

In 2019 Pope Francis visited Sophia University. This was the first papal visit in 38 years. The university continues to evolve and innovate. It remains committed to its Jesuit roots. It aims to provide a high-quality education. It also serves its students and the wider community. Sophia University is a place of learning growth and global engagement. It lives on as a testament to the dream of St Francis Xavier.
