Soorp Khatch Armenian Apostolic Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith of Armenians in the Washington DC area. Founded in 1959 in Bethesda Maryland it has served as a spiritual home for over six decades. The church’s establishment followed a wave of Armenian immigration particularly after World War II. Before that visiting priests served the growing community.
The name Soorp Khatch means Holy Cross a powerful symbol in Armenian culture and faith. The church’s founding was a landmark event for the Armenian community. It provided a place for worship cultural preservation and community building. It offered a haven from the hardships and persecutions that many Armenians had experienced in their homeland.
Rev Father Dicran Khoyan became the first permanent priest. He laid the groundwork for the vibrant community that thrives today. The current pastor Rev Fr Sarkis Aktavoukian continues that legacy. He celebrates over 20 years of service to the Armenian Apostolic Church.

But Soorp Khatch is also looking toward the future. The church has outgrown its current space. Its buildings are aging. Parking is limited. A new building project is underway. The new church is set to be constructed on a spacious five acre lot in Potomac Maryland. This new location promises better accessibility and more space to serve the growing congregation. It will also serve as a prominent showcase of Armenian culture and heritage.
