“Sportsground” might not be the first word that springs to mind when you think of a tranquil escape. Yet, here we are at Somerville Park in Eastwood. It is the only sportsground in Eastwood.

Somerville Park offers more than just athletic fields. It blends active living with community connection. The park sits on land likely belonging to the Cammeraigal and Wallumattagal people. They lived here for thousands of years before European settlement.

In 2019, Somerville Park got a significant upgrade. The City of Parramatta Council oversaw a masterplan. It aimed to enhance the park’s amenities and reflect its original charm.

Look around you. The sports pavilion was designed by Sam Crawford Architects. It includes change rooms, public amenities and club storage. There is also a kiosk and a covered picnic area with a BBQ. These additions encourage community gatherings.

Notice the timber screen at the park entrance. It is made with Blackbutt timber and an oil stain finish. The laser-cut steel signage features a powder-coated finish and the City of Parramatta logo.

The park features a playground with climbing equipment, swings and slides. A new multipurpose court is planned. Outdoor fitness stations and upgraded sportsfield lighting are also in the works. The sports fields will be realigned. A new circuit path will improve connections. Bush regeneration will occur in the Terrys Creek corridor.

The playground will be fenced. Its location allows for easy viewing from the barbeque area and oval. This design improves safety and provides a safer approach to the childcare centre.

These upgrades align with the idea of a shared backyard. The goal is to promote healthy living. It also enhances social connections for everyone.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

Somerville Park connects to the Lane Cove River National Park via Terrys Creek. This link creates a green corridor. It invites exploration beyond the park’s boundaries.

Consider the blend of activity and relaxation here. The park offers something for everyone. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community spaces. Somerville Park is a place where people can come together. They can play, relax and connect with nature.
