A prophetic word birthed Soma Sharing of Ministries Abroad. That’s how its story begins. In 1978 before the Lambeth Conference a meeting addressed spiritual renewal in the Anglican Church. Three hundred international clergy and bishops gathered. A powerful outpouring of God’s Spirit filled the room. A prophecy declared in Canterbury Cathedral. This prophecy formed the basis for Soma.
Soma Sharing of Ministries Abroad wasn’t born overnight. It took time. In 1979 Reverend Michael Harper established the first national organization in the United Kingdom. The organization expanded. Soma national bodies appeared in the United States in 1985 Canada Australia and many other countries. This international network connected church leaders. It built up the Body of Christ both overseas and in the sending countries. Its ministry became truly global “from everywhere to everywhere”.
Soma’s work isn’t just about sending teams. It’s about equipping and empowering. Teams of volunteers from churches travel to dioceses overseas. They go at the invitation of local bishops. The volunteers raise travel expenses for short-term missions. Host dioceses cover accommodation. These short missions can last from ten to fifteen days. Teams minister to those in poverty and challenging situations like Southern Sudan or Kitgum in northern Uganda.
Soma’s impact is far-reaching. The organization shares biblical teaching. Topics include renewal healing gifts of the spirit and building prophetic communities. They emphasize reciprocity in mission with international teams visiting each other. Soma works in partnership with other missionary organizations. The Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders is a key partner.
Today Soma continues to thrive. It strengthens Anglican leaders and the Church worldwide. The organization sends teams to equip empower and renew Christians. Its vision remains clear. Soma wants to fulfill the Great Commission through the transforming grace of the Holy Spirit. One mission at a time Soma changes the world for Jesus Christ. Soma’s impact continues to grow. Its influence extends throughout the globe. This quiet organization makes a significant difference in the lives of countless people. It began with a prophecy.
