Envision a landscape of charming villas nestled amidst a preserved forest. This is Södra Ängby a unique residential area in Stockholm. Built between 1933 and 1940 it stands as the largest coherent functionalistic villa area in Sweden possibly the world.

Södra Ängby is more than just houses. It’s a testament to a blend of functionalism and garden city ideals. Over 500 buildings showcase a harmonious union of architecture and nature. The city of Stockholm acquired the Ängby area in 1904. Norra Ängby the northern part was developed first. Södra Ängby presented a challenge its hilly terrain and forests requiring careful planning.

Roads gracefully follow the topography. The villas are variations on a functionalistic theme cubic volumes flat roofs large windows and rounded balconies. These details are inspired by the elegance of ocean liners. Instead of a central square the commercial center is a row of functionalist buildings near the metro station. Upon completion city construction director Göran Sidenbladh called Södra Ängby the last garden city.

Imagine strolling through Södra Ängby. Notice the bright facades of the villas. Many are rendered in light plaster. The meticulous design is evident. The architects incorporated the existing forest into the layout. It resulted in a beautiful scatter of homes amongst the trees.

Edvin Engström the head of the city’s one-family housing agency was the main architect behind this achievement. He designed almost all the villas. He was known for his unwavering principles. He often visited building sites and personally determined the exact placement of each house. He didn’t allow significant changes to the exterior design.

The villas weren’t for traditional small cottage builders. They were built on speculation by individual builders and sold ready-to-move-in. They were aimed at the upper middle class. Most homes had a maid’s room a common feature in that era.

Södra Ängby’s legacy extends beyond architecture. Famous authors like Alf Henrikson Eyvind Johnson and Barbro Lindgren lived here. Composer Lars-Erik Larsson also called Södra Ängby home. Its unique blend of functionality and natural beauty attracts residents to this day. It is a protected national cultural heritage site ensuring its preservation for future generations. A visit to Södra Ängby is a step back in time a journey into a harmonious marriage of urban planning and nature’s embrace.
