Rosy walls whisper stories. This is Sodermalmsskolan. Right here on Timmermansgatan its pale pink facade catches the light.

Sodermalmsskolan isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to Stockholm’s history. Founded in 1881 as a higher learning institution for girls it evolved. For decades it was known as Sodermalms kommunala flickskola. Imagine the young women who walked these halls. They received their student diplomas here from 1906 to 1942.

The principal’s office held many notable figures. Fredrik Aulin led the school in its early years. Later Hilda Myrberg and Anna C Pettersson shaped its destiny. Each principal left an imprint on the school’s character. Each contributed to its legacy.

The building itself is a beauty. Built between 1935 and 1936 it reflects the clean lines of functionalist architecture. David Dahl designed this masterpiece. The large central hall is striking. Sunlight streams through a glass-block lantern. It’s a stunning architectural detail. The five to six-story building is a landmark.

In 1968 Sodermalmsskolan became a co-educational school. It’s a reflection of changing times. The school now serves students from preschool through ninth grade. There is even a special needs program extending to tenth grade. Students in grades seven to nine even get to choose from drama math and English profiles.

A smaller part of Sodermalmsskolan is Maria gamla skola. This older building near Sankt Paulsgatan dates back to 1863-1864. It’s Sodermalm’s oldest school. Architect Johan Fredrik Abom designed it. Another building by the same architect was added in 1875. This complex tells a story of educational evolution.

Today Sodermalmsskolan thrives. It’s a place of learning and growth. The school even made a cameo in a music video. Veronica Maggio’s “Mandagsbarn” was filmed here in 2007. The school continues to shape the lives of generations of Stockholmers. The planned parking garage under the schoolyard is a modern addition to its story. It ensures accessibility for the community. Its future is bright. The past is ever-present.
