From a simple Baptist congregation to a vibrant hub of faith, the Söderhöjdskyrkan stands as a testament to community and resilience. Söderhöjdskyrkan, originally called Ebeneserkyrkan, began its journey in 1883 as the third Baptist congregation in Stockholm. Imagine the excitement of those early members as they envisioned a dedicated space for their growing community. The church’s construction, between 1885 and 1886, was a collective effort. Generous donations poured in, including significant contributions from builder Fredlund and bookkeeper Per Palmqvist. Architect Anders Gustaf Forsberg, inspired by the Renaissance, designed a striking two-story structure with a powerful gable architecture. Its yellow-rendered facade and ornate window decorations, especially on the gable facing Blecktornsgränd, stand out beautifully. The interior, initially adorned with paintings by Baptist artist Berndt Sörenson, featured cast iron columns supporting the gallery, each capped with an acanthus capital. Söderhöjdskyrkan has seen changes over the years. In the late 1960s, the surrounding area on Mariaberget was slated for preservation. The church, showing signs of wear, underwent renovations and modernization, including accessibility improvements. One significant change involved the interior seating. The fixed pews were replaced with flexible tables and chairs, creating a more versatile space for various activities. Today, Söderhöjdskyrkan is home to a diverse congregation. Founded in 1985, this Christian community acquired the former Ebeneserkyrkan in 1993. With approximately 200 members, two-thirds of whom are under 40, the church buzzes with life. The main hall serves as a central gathering place, hosting weekend services, choir rehearsals, music practices, youth gatherings, and more. A small apartment within the building functions primarily as an office. The church’s journey reflects the evolving needs of its community. From its initial construction through renovations and its current vibrant state, Söderhöjdskyrkan continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community in the heart of Stockholm.
