Is it possible for a forgotten industrial area to become a vibrant art hub? Here at Snösätra graffiti, the answer is a resounding yes.

Snösätra in southern Stockholm was once a neglected industrial area. But in 2014, it was reborn as one of Europe’s largest graffiti exhibitions.

Imagine walls covered in eye-catching images. People, animals, and abstract designs explode with color. Every available space showcases a different graffiti style. It is a mishmash of themes. The building owners support this transformation. They allow artists to freely express themselves on the walls.

Snösätra has a history that stretches back centuries. Originally, it was a cottage on the Älvsjö estate. Written records from 1603 mention it. Over time, the name Snösätra was applied to the surrounding area. This includes streets like Snösätravägen and Snösätragränd.

The area’s use evolved over time. It started as farmland. Then it became a military site during World War II. After the war, it housed refugees. In 1958, the military left. The Stockholm municipality rented out space to storage companies. The remaining farmland became a nature reserve.

In the 1960s, Rågsved’s population grew. Young locals started using Snösätra’s walls to express themselves. They created graffiti and shared messages. However, in 1999, Sweden implemented a zero-tolerance policy towards graffiti. This lasted for 15 years.

In 2014, the policy was lifted. Graffiti artists sought permission to paint the walls in Snösätra. This marked the beginning of the vibrant art scene we see today.

Every spring, Snösätra hosts a street art festival. Over 150 graffiti artists from around the world gather here. They create new pieces. The festival features music and a graffiti battle. There is even a virtual reality component. It allows people to try their hand at street art in a virtual world. A designated wall is open to the public for painting. Certain rules apply.

Snösätra is more than just a collection of graffiti. It is a platform for urban art. It combines curated walls by established artists with free walls for anyone to use. Snösätra is a gem of significant value to Sweden, Europe, and the world.

The Spring Beast Graffiti Festival is held annually in May. It opens the walls to artists from around the world. They paint over existing works and unleash their creativity. There is even a special wall for kids. The festival promotes urban culture and free expression. You can meet the artists and try graffiti yourself. Live concerts feature a variety of musicians and dancers. You can also participate in yoga, Qi Gong, and other activities.

Graffitifrämjandet or “the Graffiti Promoters” in Sweden supports this movement. They aim to improve the status of graffiti as art. They spread awareness about graffiti and street art on all levels.

Other legal graffiti walls have emerged in Stockholm. These are in Tensta, Farsta and Södermalm.

To get here, take the green line towards Hagsätra. Get off at Rågsved station. Snösätragränd is a short walk from there.

Snösätra stands as a testament to the power of art. It transformed a forgotten space into a dynamic cultural landmark. It is a place where creativity knows no bounds. It is a constantly evolving canvas.
