Perhaps Smitswinkel Bay’s greatest allure is its inaccessibility. Smitswinkel Bay is a secluded haven. It sits on the scenic coastal drive between Simon’s Town and Cape Point Nature Reserve. Let’s explore this hidden gem.

Smitswinkel Bay lies at the bottom of a steep cliff. It is hidden beneath the curve of the road leading to the reserve. Locals fondly call it Smits. It is the last bay on the False Bay side of the Cape. Smitswinkel Bay is about 20 minutes outside of Simon’s Town.

Smitswinkel means Smith’s shop in Afrikaans as in blacksmith. The name dates back to 1744. However, its exact origin remains unknown. Smitswinkel Bay was first called Patience. This was after the tiny stream that flows into the bay. Mariners filling water casks needed patience. The water trickled slowly. Back then, Smitswinkel Bay could only be reached by boat.

To get to Smitswinkel Bay Beach, drive through Simon’s Town toward Cape Point via the M44. Stop at a parking space just before the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Smitswinkel Bay is relatively inaccessible. You can only reach it by foot. A very steep incline awaits you. The walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The zig-zag footpath descends 120 meters to the beach. The path is clear and easy to follow. Little signposts indicate the way. The strenuous walk is worthwhile. Ocean and mountain views reward you along the way.

Smitswinkel Bay offers simplicity. There is no electricity nor cellphone reception. Most homes use paraffin lamps and gas stoves. Some shacks have solar panels and solar water heaters. There are no roads, street lights, or shops. Bring everything you need for a day on the beach.

Although not as popular as other Cape Town beaches, Smitswinkel Bay is picturesque. It is a perfect picnic destination. Judas Peak overlooks the beach from the south. The beach is protected from the prevailing south-easterly wind. It offers soft white sand and calm waters. Granite boulders scatter along the shoreline. You can enjoy a panoramic view of False Bay. Note that there are no amenities or lifeguards.

Smitswinkel Bay isn’t really for swimming. But you can dip in the rock pools. Scuba diving is what this beach is famous for. There are five wrecks in the bay. These are the SAS Good Hope, SAS Transvaal, and Princess Elizabeth. The Oratavia and a diamond dredge called the Rockeater are also here. The Navy deliberately sunk these ships in the 1970s. They now form an artificial reef. It teems with fish, starfish, and marine life. The reef is accessible by boat. It offers a deep multi-level dive averaging 30 to 36 metres.

Snorkelling, free diving, fishing, and trek netting are popular. You can also play beach bats and Frisbee. Explore the boulders, rock pools, caves, and grottos on the south side during low tide.

With its secluded beach and breathtaking views, Smitswinkel Bay is ideal. It is a place to spend a day away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Smitswinkel Bay offers a unique escape.
