A simple bequest a defunct dairy farm. These were the unlikely beginnings of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center SERC. In 1962 Robert Lee Forrest left his 368-acre Java dairy farm to the Smithsonian Institution. This wasn’t just any farm. It sat on the Rhode River near Edgewater Maryland a prime location for studying coastal ecosystems.

The Smithsonian initially considered selling the property. However Secretary S Dillon Ripley saw its potential. He envisioned a place dedicated to environmental research and education. This vision sparked the creation of the Chesapeake Bay Center for Field Biology in 1965. It was a humble start. The old cow barn became a makeshift laboratory. The hayloft became a dormitory.

But the center’s impact grew quickly. A grant from the Ford Foundation provided funding for expansion. More land was acquired. The center’s focus sharpened. It became dedicated to understanding the Chesapeake Bay’s unique environment. The center’s research expanded to encompass terrestrial atmospheric and estuarine ecosystems.

Today SERC stands as a world-renowned institution. It’s a sprawling 2650-acre campus. It boasts a diverse array of habitats. Coastal plain forests wetlands marshes and brackish environments all exist within its boundaries. SERC’s research tackles critical issues. These include climate change invasive species and water quality. The center also maintains an extensive database on invasive species. This database tracks over 500 species along coastal North America.

SERC has been a pioneer in biotelemetry. This technology tracks the movement of blue crabs. It is a valuable tool for understanding marine predator behavior and fishery management. SERC is also the patent holder for the Spectral Radiometer the national standard for monitoring solar radiation. This is just one example of its many technical innovations.

The center’s education program is equally impressive. Every year SERC welcomes thousands of students teachers and families. It provides advice consultation and testimony to governmental agencies and conservation organizations. The center plays a vital role in training future scientists and educating the public.

SERC’s story is one of remarkable growth and influence. It transformed from a simple bequest into a significant center for environmental research. It continues to play a crucial role in understanding and protecting our planet’s ecosystems. As you stand here at SERC you are witnessing a living testament to the power of vision and dedication.
