Fifty years of stories whispered from these walls. Slätgårdsskolan stands before you a testament to resilience. This isn’t just a school. It’s a community hub a place where generations have learned and grown.
Slätgårdsskolan opened its doors in 1968. Designed by architects Gösta Uddén and Olle Wählström it embodied the modern ideals of its time. The original building was a striking example of mid-century architecture. It featured geometric shapes and a distinct contrast between red brick and black timber sections. The school was even designated as “especially valuable from a historical cultural historical environmental or artistic viewpoint” by the Stockholm City Museum.
Sadly tragedy struck. In June 2020 a devastating fire engulfed the main building. The flames consumed years of memories and learning. It was a heartbreaking loss for the entire community. But from the ashes a phoenix rises. The fire while devastating didn’t extinguish the spirit of Slätgårdsskolan.
The old building was demolished. But the commitment to education remained strong. A new sports hall and a separate building (House J) were quickly constructed. House J houses specialized classrooms for subjects like nature studies textiles and woodworking. It even includes classrooms for preschoolers through third grade. It is a beautiful building characterized by two main volumes grouped around a central stairwell also serving as a gathering place.
The reconstruction of the main building is underway. It’s expected to be completed by the turn of the year 2025/2026. This new Slätgårdsskolan will boast approximately 6100 square meters of space. This will create room for approximately 600 students from preschool through ninth grade. The design emphasizes community. The central atrium acts as a vibrant heart connecting all parts of the school. It aims to be a modern and safe learning environment for all.
Slätgårdsskolan’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of perseverance. It’s a story of community. It’s a story still being written. As you leave today remember the resilience of this school. Remember the lessons learned and the future that awaits. Slätgårdsskolan is more than just a school. It is a symbol of hope and renewal in the heart of Stockholm.
