“A miniature Norwegian fjord” That’s how American ambassador William Thomas described Skurusundet in 1891. Isn’t that a captivating image?

Skurusundet is a strait in Stockholm’s archipelago. It runs north-south between Sickla Island and Ormingelandet. It forms the border between the historical provinces of Södermanland and Uppland. Think of it as a watery boundary a natural division between two ancient lands.

Imagine Skurusundet in the late 19th century. Grand villas line the steep cliffs. These are not ordinary houses. They’re the so-called “grosshandlarvillor” – opulent summer homes built by wealthy merchants. They display incredible craftsmanship the epitome of late 19th-century architectural style. Before the mid-1920s accessing these beautiful houses was a journey in itself. Passenger boats regularly served numerous piers along Skurusundet. Some of these piers remain today.

The ambassador’s description is quite precise. He noted the villas surrounded by lovely walkways plantings fountains and a prominent white flagpole. This flagpole stood proudly in front of each house. The flag was always raised on Sundays and holidays. And of course when a distinguished guest was visiting.

Skurusundet also boasts the islands of Sveriges holme and Danmarks holme at its northern end. These islands add to the charm and mystique. Road 222 crosses Skurusundet via the Skuru bridge. It connects the two sides of this beautiful waterway. The bridge itself is a marvel of engineering. Recently renovated it serves as a testament to the importance of Skurusundet in connecting communities.

Skurusundet flows southward into Lännerstasundet and Duvnäsviken. It’s a crucial part of the archipelago’s intricate network of waterways. A place where history nature and modern infrastructure beautifully intertwine.

So next time you are in Stockholm take the time to explore Skurusundet. Experience its rich history its natural beauty and its unique position within the archipelago. You may discover your own special memories of this little Norwegian fjord in miniature.
