How about a whirl on the ice where design meets athleticism? That’s Škoda IceRink. Here in Prague 10, specifically in Strašnice, stands a modern ice-skating complex. It’s not just ice it’s a testament to architectural ingenuity and a haven for winter sports enthusiasts.

Škoda IceRink isn’t just another rink. It’s an architectural statement designed by Prague studio Vrtiška a Žák. The exterior boasts a unique cassette facade of powder-coated aluminum sheets. These are arranged on diagonal beams creating a dynamic ice-like structure. RGB LED lighting illuminates this facade at night.

Inside Škoda IceRink, you’ll find two ice surfaces each measuring 28 x 56 meters. These rinks cater to public skating figure skating and ice hockey clubs. The schedule is designed to accommodate everyone from families to seasoned players. Special hours are set aside for children and reserved slots for hockey players.

But Škoda IceRink offers more than just skating. It has a children’s corner and even an ICEGYM. This special gym focuses on bodyweight exercising with top-notch equipment. Professional trainers offer individual programs and group classes. Yoga TRX and cross-training are all on offer. After a workout, you can visit the ICEBAR. The ICEBAR serves healthy snacks drinks coffee and beer with views of the ice rinks.

Škoda IceRink opened its doors on February 6 2018. The construction cost amounted to 170 million Czech crowns. Padok Investments initially funded the project with contributions from private investors. Subterra served as the general contractor. In 2018, the stadium won the Building of the Year award.

In March 2020, Pexanova, owned by Petr Nešetřil took over the stadium. This transition followed financial difficulties linked to COVID-19 restrictions.

The interior design features raw construction materials like concrete and brick. These are offset by organic plasterboard walls that enhance the verticality of the space. Color accents serve as a navigation system throughout the building. Furnishings include pieces by Vitra Pedrali and mmcité. Lighting fixtures come from Flos.

Škoda IceRink emphasizes children’s education. The Ice Skating Kindergarten introduces children to the basics of winter sports. “Skills” classes are tailored for older children and teenagers. These sessions focus on hockey skills. Coaches carefully tailor the training to maximize progress with at most four players. The rink also promotes pond hockey. This is a nod to traditional unorganized matches played on natural ice. Private rentals of the ice rink are available.

So whether you are a budding skater a seasoned hockey player or just seeking a unique architectural experience, Škoda IceRink welcomes you. It combines sport design and community spirit.
