Staring up at this strange yellow object, it’s hard to believe it’s a work of art. The Skitstövlen Sculpture, as it’s called, is made of aluminium and stands on a kind of easel. It was created by the artist Roland Haeberlein in 1986 as a symbol of protest. The inscription on the sculpture says: “The year’s stupidest idea deserves to be compared to last year’s Skitstövlen”. The sculpture was stolen in August 2015, and until today, it hasn’t been found again. The Skitstövlen Sculpture was created as a protest against the commercialization of art institutions. The first Skitstövlen award was given to the director of the National Museum in Stockholm for organizing a Coca-Cola exhibition. The director was apparently not amused and resigned shortly after. The award was presented over the years to people who, in the opinion of a committee, were especially bad for the art world. The award was last presented in 2004. It is a curious fact that the committee even managed to make a profit with its fundraising activities for the award. They felt this was so embarrassing that they simply gave the money away. Skitstövlen is a symbol of protest against the commercialization of art institutions. It was created by the artist Roland Haeberlein in 1986.
