Ever wondered where Hong Kong safely stores its low-level radioactive waste? I will tell you all about the Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility Pier. This pier serves a vital purpose for this facility.

The Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility is on Siu A Chau. This is an uninhabited island south of Lantau Island. The facility began operations in July 2005. It was built to meet stringent international standards. These standards ensure safe storage and handling.

What kind of waste are we talking about? Hong Kong’s industry, medical, and educational institutions create low-level radioactive waste. This waste produces no detectable heat. It has a low radioactive level. Examples include smoke detector parts and luminous watch dials. Kerosene lanterns and lightning protection conductor heads are also included. We also have weakened radiation sources from hospitals.

Before 2005, this waste was stored in disused tunnels and hospitals. The government decided a purpose-built facility was needed. So, the Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility was constructed.

The facility includes a 55-meter-long jetty. That is this pier. There is a shielded waste storage vault here. A fully-equipped laboratory ensures safety. An automatic control room monitors everything. A wastewater management system treats any contaminated water. Specially-designed waste reception and processing areas are here too. Radiation levels are continuously monitored inside and outside the facility. This ensures safe operation at the Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility.

Between August 2005 and late 2006, waste from disused tunnels, factories, and hospitals was moved to the Siu A Chau facility. This included waste from Mount Parish air-raid tunnels. The facility has enough capacity for 100 years of waste.

The opening ceremony for the Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility was in June 2006. The facility cost $78 million. It uses real-time surveillance systems. The systems operate 24/7 from a remote control center.

The Environmental Protection Department encourages minimizing waste generation. They also want producers to manage their waste responsibly. Medical and research institutions should use radioactive substances with shorter half-lives.

In January 2016, a contract began to maintain the facility’s safe operation. Upgrades to communication and security systems improved its performance. So, the Siu A Chau Low-level Radioactive Waste Storage Facility Pier is more than just a pier. It is a crucial part of Hong Kong’s radioactive waste management system. It ensures the safe storage of low-level radioactive waste.
