Three thousand five hundred species. That’s how many tropical and subtropical plants thrive at Sítio Roberto Burle Marx. This isn’t just a garden. It’s a living testament to a visionary.

Welcome to Sítio Roberto Burle Marx a place where art and nature intertwine. Here in Barra de Guaratiba on Rio’s west side sits more than 400000 square meters of botanical wonder. This estate was the home of Roberto Burle Marx from 1973 until his death in 1994. He acquired the property originally called Sítio Santo Antônio da Bica in 1949 with his brother Siegfried.

Burle Marx didn’t just live here. He transformed it. He saw this land not as a static space but a dynamic landscape laboratory. He meticulously cultivated his collection of plants starting when he was just six years old. These plants aren’t merely decorative. They are elements of living art works. They are a vibrant blend of the Atlantic Forest mangrove swamps and restinga. The Sítio became a treasure trove of unique plants from families like Araceae Arecaceae Bromeliaceae Cycadaceae Heliconiaceae Marantaceae and Velloziaceae.

He was more than a landscaper. Burle Marx was a painter sculptor designer and even an opera singer. His home is now a museum. You can see his personal belongings his art and the vast collection of folk art he amassed. The museum houses more than 3000 items. His genius lies in his fusion of modernist art and the raw beauty of Brazilian flora. It was a bold experiment. The result was the modern tropical garden which continues to inspire worldwide.

Even after his death the Sítio continued to resonate. The ashes of the famous singer Renato Russo were scattered in its garden in 1996 fulfilling part of his wish for a flowery resting place. Ironically though the garden at the time lacked the abundance of flowers he’d desired.

Burle Marx’s foresight is astounding. In 1985 he donated the Sítio to IPHAN ensuring its preservation for generations to come. Six years after his death in 2000 the entire Sítio received full heritage protection. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A place where visitors can walk among his dreams. A place that showcases his extraordinary vision. A place called Sítio Roberto Burle Marx.
