Originally, this building was not intended as a cultural center. Construction began in 1905. The plan was to house the Mitra Arquiepiscopal. But the Federal Government acquired it. It became the first permanent home of the Supreme Federal Court. The inauguration was on April 3, 1909.

Adolpho Morales de Los Rios designed this architectural gem. His eclectic style is evident. It makes the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal a landmark. The Supreme Federal Court used this building until 1960. That year, the capital moved to Brasilia. After that, the building housed other tribunals. These included the Superior Electoral Tribunal. Also the Federal Court of Appeals found a home here.

A seven-year restoration project revitalized the building. On April 4, 2001, it reopened as the Centro Cultural. This transformation marked a new chapter. It became the first cultural center of the Judiciary in Brazil.
