Ever heard of a building nicknamed “Bacon-Hill?” That’s Silvieberg 3. This residential building stands tall in Marieberg, Stockholm. It has earned its quirky moniker due to its appearance.

Silvieberg 3 is located at Fyrverkarbacken 28-42. Its name comes from the Silvieberg mountain. The mountain is east of Marieberg.

Construction of Silvieberg 3 finished in 1963. It forms part of a distinctive group of buildings. The Erlander House from 1963, the DN skyscraper from 1964, and the SvD building from 1962 are also part of this group. Together they shape Stockholm’s cityscape.

The city plan for this area was created in September 1960. Göran Sidenbladh signed it. The plan detailed a building aligned east-west. It specified a maximum height of 76 meters above the city’s zero plane for the Erlander House. West of it, a lower building of 60 meters was planned. That lower building became Bacon-Hill.

Silvieberg 3 rises high above the National Archives. It is near the Västerbron bridge. The building has ten floors with 150 apartments. Befa built it based on designs by architects Stig Ancker, Bengt Gate, and Sten Lindegren.

The architects designed the long facades with alternating bands. These bands are red-brown and light plaster. This pattern resembles slices of bacon. Thus, its nickname was born.

Martin Stugart described Bacon-Hill in Dagens Nyheter. He wrote on January 24, 2005, that the building looks like a bacon slice standing on its edge. He added that the facade glimmers pinkish-red at sunset. It looks freshly fried, even crispy.

Since 1994, a housing association owns the property. The Brf Silvieberg 3 has its office at Fyrverkarbacken 40. The building has been registered since 1987.

So, next time you see Silvieberg 3, remember its tasty nickname. Think about the architecture and the striking facade. Silvieberg 3 is not just a building. It is a landmark with a memorable story.
