“A humble place where wonderful people served” That’s how one member described the Silver Street Baptist Mission. This unassuming building on the corner of Silver and Calvert Streets in Marrickville has a rich history. It’s more than just a church it’s a testament to faith community and perseverance.

The Silver Street Baptist Mission wasn’t always here. It began in 1887 as an offshoot of Petersham Baptist Church. Initially services were held in Winkies’ Hall near the tram depot. Then in 1889 thanks to the generosity of local businessmen like Sir Hugh Dixson and Mr J Palmer the church found its current home. Mr Palmer even purchased the land intending to sell it later if the congregation grew a truly remarkable act of faith in the community’s potential.

The current building opened in 1961 a significant upgrade from its earlier humble beginnings. But the story of Silver Street Baptist Mission isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who shaped this community. Reverend Peter R Green served as pastor for an impressive 36 years from 1984 until 2020. He wasn’t just a spiritual leader he was a community leader deeply involved in the lives of his congregation.

The church was known for its inclusive nature welcoming people from all walks of life. It’s a place where differences were celebrated not judged. This emphasis on inclusivity is reflected in the church’s welcoming message of love and acceptance for all. This was not just words but actions it reflected their genuine care and concern for those in need.

Unfortunately the Silver Street Baptist Mission closed its doors in March 2020. Expensive fire protection requirements proved insurmountable. However the legacy of this mission the spirit of its community continues. The memories of its members and its dedication to service remain strong. This church stands as a symbol of the enduring power of faith hope and love within a community. It’s a story of humble beginnings unwavering dedication and lasting impact. This is the essence of the Silver Street Baptist Mission a quiet corner of Marrickville brimming with a powerful history.
