What echoes linger at the Signs of War War memorial? This memorial, nestled in Wellington, New Zealand, stands as a powerful testament to the sacrifices made by New Zealanders in times of conflict. Dedicated on Anzac Day in 1932, the Signs of War War memorial initially commemorated the lives lost in World War I. It now also honors those who served and fell in the South African War, World War II, and the wars in Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The memorial is a complex structure. It encompasses the War Memorial Carillon, the Hall of Memories, and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The Hall of Memories houses four Rolls of Honour, bearing the names and ranks of 28,654 New Zealanders. A bronze statue, “Mother and Children” by Lyndon Smith, resides in the Sanctuary of the Hall of Memories. This statue is a poignant representation of the families who endured the loss of loved ones during these conflicts. Outside the Hall of Memories lies the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. This tomb holds the remains of an unidentified New Zealand soldier, repatriated in 2004. He symbolizes all New Zealand service members lost in war and rests beneath a bronze mantel inscribed with “An Unknown New Zealand Warrior / He Toa Matangaro No Aotearoa”. The carillon tower, initially clad in Putaruru stone, now stands tall in Takaka marble. This tower houses 74 bells. The largest, “Peace/Rangimārie”, is the largest bell in the Southern Hemisphere. These bells resonate with the stories of those who served, each bearing inscriptions commemorating individuals, battles, and medical units. Originally containing 49 bells, the carillon was expanded to its current 74 bells. The added bass bells are named “Grace/Aroha”, “Hope/Tūmanako”, “Remembrance/Whakamaharatanga”, and “Peace/Rangimārie”. The Signs of War War memorial is more than just stone, marble, and bronze. It’s a living testament. It’s a space where the echoes of the past intertwine with the present. It’s a place to reflect on sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of peace. The memorial has undergone earthquake strengthening and refurbishment projects in recent years. It is currently undergoing further seismic work and restoration to ensure its preservation for future generations.
