From a rented room in a locksmith’s house at Schlossergasse 117, a future pioneer of the mind emerged. This was the birthplace of Sigmund Freud, born Sigismund Schlomo Freud on May 6, 1856. Sigmund Freud’s legacy is intricately woven into the fabric of Vienna. The Sigmund Freud Museum at Berggasse 19 isn’t just a museum. It’s a portal to nearly half a century of Freud’s life and work, from 1891 to 1938. Here, within these walls, Freud penned his groundbreaking works: “The Interpretation of Dreams,” “Five Lectures on Psychoanalysis,” “The Ego and the Id,” and many more. Imagine the Wednesday Psychological Society gatherings in his waiting room, the very genesis of the psychoanalytic movement. Freud’s life at Berggasse 19 wasn’t solely dedicated to analysis. He and his wife, Martha Bernays, raised their six children here: Mathilde, Jean-Martin, Oliver, Ernst, Sophie, and Anna. His sister-in-law, Minna Bernays, also became a permanent resident after the loss of her fiancé. Freud, an atheist, even underwent a hasty tutoring in Hebrew prayers for his religious wedding ceremony with Martha. The Sigmund Freud Museum also serves as a poignant reminder of the Nazi era. Following the Anschluss in 1938, Freud, facing persecution, was forced to flee. The museum acknowledges the building’s subsequent history, where apartments were used to house 79 Jewish individuals before their deportation. It’s a somber note amidst the celebration of Freud’s intellectual contributions. Though Freud escaped to London, taking his iconic couch with him, the Sigmund Freud Museum offers a powerful experience. You can almost sense the weight of history, the echoes of Freud’s intellectual wrestling, within these walls. The museum’s modernization allows you to trace the footsteps of this intellectual giant, a man who revolutionized our understanding of the human mind.
