Whose heart beats faster at the sight of golden spires rising against the sapphire sky? Before you stands Shwe Za Gar Ceti, a place whispered to be blessed by Buddha himself. Shwe Za Gar Ceti rests in Mandalay, a city steeped in prophecy and royal history. Mandalay’s very existence fulfills an ancient prediction, a prophecy foretelling a grand city at the foot of Mandalay Hill. This hill, you see, isn’t just a geographical feature. It is believed that Buddha, accompanied by his disciple Ananda, visited this very hill 2,500 years ago. Here, they met an ogress named Chandamukhi, who made an extraordinary offering to the Buddha. She severed her own breasts and presented them as a symbol of devotion. In return, Buddha prophesied that Chandamukhi, reborn as a king, would one day found a magnificent city at the hill’s base. King Mindon, in 1857, seemingly fulfilled this ancient prophecy, establishing Mandalay and its royal palace. Interestingly, each side of the palace walls measures 2,400 ta (a ta being roughly 3.5 meters), commemorating the 2,400th anniversary of Buddha’s death. As you explore Shwe Za Gar Ceti, look for the small pavilion below Mandalay Hill’s summit. There, you’ll find a sculpture of the kneeling Chandamukhi, her severed breasts in her hands, a stark reminder of the legend. Another monument, the Shweyattaw Hpaya (Golden Pointing Buddha), portrays Buddha pointing towards the city, solidifying the connection between prophecy and place. Shwe Za Gar Ceti is more than just a ceti; it’s a thread in the rich tapestry of Mandalay’s story, a testament to prophecy, royalty, and deep-seated devotion.
