“Did you know that you’re looking at a ghost of the Royal Palace?” That’s essentially what the Shwenandaw Kyaung is. It’s the only remaining structure of the wooden Royal Palace built by King Mindon in the mid-19th century.

Shwenandaw Kyaung, also known as Shwe-Kyaung-pyi, stands as a testament to Burmese history and artistry. Once part of the Amarapura royal palace complex, it was later moved to Mandalay. Here, it became known as Mya Nan San Kyaw. It served as the northern section of the Glass Palace and part of the king’s royal apartments.

King Mindon himself passed away in this very structure in 1878. His son, King Thibaw, succeeded him. Thibaw used the building for meditation. However, he became convinced that his father’s spirit haunted it. Superstition took hold. He ordered the building dismantled and removed from the Royal City.

Over five years, it was reconstructed as a monastery. It became a work of merit dedicated to King Mindon’s memory. Ironically, this act of superstition preserved a vital piece of history. During World War II, allied bombing destroyed the rest of the Royal Palace. Shwenandaw Kyaung survived because it had been moved.

As you gaze at the Shwenandaw Kyaung, appreciate its intricate 19th-century teak architecture. Notice the complex wood carvings depicting Buddhist mythology. The exterior is covered in skillfully crafted sculptures portraying stories of Buddha’s life. Upstairs, ancient carvings adorn the roof, balcony, walls, ceilings, and doors.

Inside, you’ll find a small golden statue. It is a beautiful reminder of the building’s history. Note that because it is a monastery, there isn’t a large Buddha statue like in some temples.

The best time to visit Shwenandaw Kyaung is between October and April. The weather in Mandalay is hot and dry. However, temperatures can drop sharply at night. Remember to dress appropriately and remove your shoes before entering.

Shwenandaw Kyaung opens daily from 8 am to 8 pm. The entrance fee is included in the Mandalay Archeologic Zone combo ticket. This ticket also grants access to other historical sites.
