From the East Gate I saw Mandalay Hill in the distance. The East Gate is one of the twelve gates surrounding Mandalay Palace. It was a significant entrance to the royal complex. This gate’s importance is underscored by its strategic position. It faced the Great Hall of Audience and the Lion Throne.

The original Mandalay Palace was built between 1857 and 1859. King Mindon oversaw its construction. He aimed to create a magnificent royal residence. The palace complex was vast. It was surrounded by a moat two miles long on each side. The walls had three gates on each side. Twelve gates in total each representing a zodiac sign.

During World War II much of the palace was destroyed. Allied bombing caused extensive damage. Only the royal mint and the watch tower survived. In the 1990s a replica of the palace was rebuilt. Some modern materials were used in the reconstruction. The East Gate forms part of this rebuilt complex.

Standing before the East Gate you can almost feel the echoes of history. Imagine the grandeur of the original palace. Visualize royal processions entering through this very gate. Picture the bustling activity of the court. Contemplate the lives of the kings and queens who once lived within these walls. The East Gate is a tangible link to Mandalay’s past. It serves as a reminder of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. It offers a glimpse into the lives of the last Burmese monarchy.
