“A royal white elephant, can you imagine?” our guide began, gesturing towards the Shwe Phone Yaung Pagoda. “Legend says that King Anawrahta of Bagan entrusted his white elephant to choose the perfect location for this sacred pagoda. The elephant, carrying a replica of Buddha’s tooth, stopped right here. It declared this spot, atop Shwethalyaung Hill, as the most auspicious place.” The Shwe Phone Yaung Pagoda, bathed in the warm glow of the Myanmar sun, certainly exudes an aura of tranquility and reverence. It stands as a testament to King Anawrahta’s devotion, dating back to the 11th century. He acquired several Buddhist relics on a journey to China. Determined to enshrine them properly, he let his white elephant, Sinma Yintha, guide him. The elephant, burdened with the replica of Buddha’s tooth, chose not one but two hilltops: Shwethalyaung and Pyat Kha Yway. Pagodas were erected on both, with the precious tooth relic housed within the Shwe Phone Yaung Pagoda. Every year, the Kyaukse elephant dance festival takes place at the foot of Shwethalyaung Hill. This vibrant festival honors the royal elephants, commemorating their role in this sacred site’s creation. The Shwe Phone Yaung Pagoda isn’t just a historical monument. It is a living embodiment of faith, a place where history and spirituality intertwine.
