Hidden among the tranquil landscapes of Sakurai lies Shourin-ji Temple. This unassuming temple holds a secret a stunning eleven-headed Kannon statue. This National Treasure stands tall its right hand lowered elegantly. Its left hand cradles a flower vase. The statue’s masculine features and strong carvings contrast with its grace.

Shourin-ji Temple boasts a rich history. It was originally the principal image of Daigorin-ji Temple. This was a temple near Omiwa Shrine. In 1868 the Meiji Government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. This led to the removal and destruction of Buddhist statues in shrines. The Kannon statue was moved to Shourin-ji Temple for protection.

For nearly twenty years it remained hidden. Then Ernest Fenollosa an American philosopher intervened. He insisted on the statue’s public display. Fenollosa’s surprise upon seeing the statue is legendary. He even donated a small shrine to house it. This shrine had wheels for easy relocation in case of fire. It was a precursor to modern cultural property protection methods. The statue was designated a National Treasure in 1897. Today it sits in a glass case allowing for 360-degree viewing.

Shourin-ji Temple also houses a large white stone Jizo statue. This statue is believed to promise safe childbirth. From the temple’s balcony you can enjoy panoramic views. You can see Mount Miwa and the Hashihaka Tumulus. These views are breathtaking. They offer a glimpse into the heart of ancient Yamato the cradle of Japanese civilization and Buddhism.
