Have you ever witnessed a sunset that paints the sky with a thousand hues? From Shirley Heights Lookout you can. Shirley Heights isn’t just a viewpoint. It’s a living testament to Antigua’s rich history. Standing here you stand on a former military compound. Built in the 1780s it protected the vital English Harbour dockyard. Governor Thomas Shirley himself urged its creation. He understood the strategic importance of this location. Over fifty structures were erected including a fort barracks and even a cemetery. Imagine the soldiers stationed here. They guarded the harbour. They stood watch against potential French attacks. One notable event was the failed 1803 attack by 700 men from Guadeloupe. This was the only serious attempt by the French to conquer Antigua. Shirley Heights served its purpose for decades. Troops were stationed here well into the 1850s. After that the structures fell into disrepair. However restoration efforts revived this historic place. Today the old military lookout buildings house a popular restaurant. The Shirley Heights Lookout Restaurant is famous for its Sunday evening parties. Live music food and breathtaking views draw locals and tourists alike. The scene is spectacular especially at sunset. You might even be lucky enough to see the Green Flash. That is a fleeting moment when a green light appears on the horizon as the sun dips below the sea. It is a sight few ever capture. As you stand here at Shirley Heights you are not just looking at a view. You are connecting with centuries of history. You are experiencing the legacy of a strategic military site. You are participating in the vibrant present of Antigua. And the view well the view is simply unforgettable.
