How about a journey through time and tradition right here at Shirayuri Gakuen Elementary School? This school isn’t just a place of learning. It embodies a legacy that stretches back centuries and across continents.

Shirayuri Gakuen’s story starts far away in France. In 1696, the Convent of St. Paul of Chartres was established. This convent dedicated itself to education and service. For over 300 years, it aided those in need, regardless of borders.

The Convent’s work reached Japan in 1878. Three French nuns arrived in Hakodate, Hokkaido. They sought to build a convent here. Three years later, they founded a school in Kanda, Tokyo. This humble beginning laid the foundation for Shirayuri Gakuen.

The school faced hardship. The Great Kanda Fire of 1913 destroyed the facilities. The Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 brought further devastation. Yet, the school persevered. In 1927, it relocated to Kudan. This site is now Shirayuri Gakuen’s headquarters.

Through changes and challenges, Shirayuri Gakuen grew. It adapted to the changing times. In 1935, it became Shirayuri Girls’ High School. After educational reforms, it transitioned to Shirayuri Junior College in 1950.

Finally, in 1965, Shirayuri University moved to Chofu. It established a four-year university program. Shirayuri University continued to expand its offerings. The institution enriched its curriculum and facilities. It maintained a commitment to small-group education. This reflects its Catholic roots.

Shirayuri Gakuen Elementary School is part of this broader history. It shares the values and traditions of Shirayuri. These include pursuing truth and empathizing with others. The school also values service. Students learn to appreciate the beauty around them.

The fleur-de-lys emblem with a sword symbolizes the school’s French heritage. Students address the Sister who takes care of the college. They call her “Ma Soeur” or “My Sister” in French. This reflects the close-knit community.

Shirayuri Gakuen is known for its high educational standards. Many students continue their education within the Shirayuri system. They may begin in pre-school and continue through university. About 20% choose this path.

The school fosters good manners and discipline. While some perceive it as exclusive, it emphasizes character development. Shirayuri Gakuen encourages students to reach their full potential. The modern buildings and chapel stand as symbols of progress. They also honor tradition.

As you stand before Shirayuri Gakuen Elementary School, remember its long journey. From a small convent in France to a thriving school in Tokyo, it represents perseverance.
