The Shinohara Entertainment Theatre first opened its doors in 1951. Asagoro Shinohara founded it. He began producing taishu engeki after World War II. These performances offered solace to people seeking entertainment. The Shinohara Engeijo Hall became a permanent fixture. It is located in Jujo, Kita-ku, Tokyo.

The 1980s brought a new wave of popularity. Tomio Umezawa a taishu engeki actor became a TV star and singer. Child actors called Chibi Tama also gained popularity. In 1991 Asagoro Shinohara’s son Yoshihiro took over. He became Chairman of the Tokyo Taishu Engeki Halls Association.
The Shinohara Entertainment Theatre celebrated its 71st anniversary in 2022. Special performances marked this milestone. Yoshihiro Shinohara proudly continues the taishu engeki tradition. His motto is “beautiful lotus flowers bloom despite muddy waters”.
Masahiro Shinohara became Representative Director in 2022. He is Yoshihiro’s eldest son. The Japan Culture and Taishu Engeki Association formed. It took over from the Tokyo Taishu Engeki Association. The aim was to broaden activities. It also enhanced the organization.
The JCTEA seeks to raise awareness of taishu engeki. It aims to improve its social status. It also develops human resources. International public relations are also a focus.
