Amidst the vibrant energy of Tokyo, discover the serenity of Shinnyo Yana. Shinnyo Yana offers a tranquil escape. It’s a place for quiet reflection within the bustling metropolis. The Shinnyo-en Head Temple Complex, which includes Shinnyo Yana, stands as a testament to the vision of its founders, Shinjo and Tomoji Ito. They dedicated their lives to spiritual service, establishing Shinnyo-en as a unique Buddhist denomination.

Shinnyo Yana is part of this larger complex. It embodies the principles of Shinnyo-en. These principles emphasize compassion, wisdom, and the inherent goodness within everyone. Shinjo and Tomoji Ito’s teachings focused on integrating Buddhist practices into everyday life. This focus makes Shinnyo-en accessible and relevant to people from all walks of life. Their daughter, Her Holiness Shinso Ito, now leads Shinnyo-en, continuing their legacy of service and spiritual guidance.

The history of Shinnyo-en began in Tachikawa in 1936. The Itos established their first temple, Shinchoji, there in 1938. The community grew quickly. This growth eventually led to the establishment of the Shinnyo-en Head Temple Complex. Shinnyo Yana serves as a reminder of the Itos’ dedication. Their journey was marked by both profound loss and unwavering faith. The loss of their infant son, Chibun, and later their son Yuichi, deepened their commitment to helping others.

Shinnyo Yana stands as a beacon of peace and hope within the city. The name “Shinnyo-en” translates to “Sangha of Truth.” It reflects the founders’ commitment to providing a path to enlightenment for all. The Nirvana Sutra serves as the central teaching for Shinnyo-en. Inspired by this sutra, Shinjo and Tomoji sculpted a 16-foot reclining Buddha. This statue is now enshrined in the Sesshin Training Hall, a testament to their artistic vision and spiritual dedication. Remember to call ahead if you plan to visit Shinnyo Yana. Services and training sessions may limit access at times.

Shinnyo Yana is more than just a physical place. It represents the enduring spirit of Shinnyo-en. It reminds us of the power of compassion, service, and the pursuit of truth. As you leave Shinnyo Yana, carry with you the sense of peace and inspiration it offers. May it remind you of your own inherent goodness and the potential for positive change within the world.
