“Nine pagodas? In one day?” a woman exclaimed, her voice echoing with disbelief as she gazed up at the pristine white structure before her. “That seems like an impossible feat!” This, my friends, is the Shin Bot Mal Pagoda. It certainly stands out in the landscape. Unlike the traditional golden pagodas of Myanmar, this one is brilliantly white. The Shin Bot Mal Pagoda stands as a monument to love and loss. It was commissioned in 1816 by King Bagyidaw, a ruler known for his ambitious architectural projects. He built it in memory of his beloved first consort, Princess Hsinbyume, who tragically died in childbirth. The pagoda’s unique design sets it apart from the usual Burmese pagoda styles. Instead of a tapering spire, the Shin Bot Mal Pagoda evokes the majestic Mount Meru, a sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology. It’s a visual representation of the seven mountain ranges that encircle Mount Meru, ascending towards a celestial peak. Picture, if you will, the princess ascending through these levels towards a heavenly paradise. Unfortunately, this beautiful structure wasn’t immune to the forces of nature. Just 22 years after its completion, a devastating earthquake shook the region, leaving the pagoda severely damaged. For over 30 years, it stood as a poignant reminder of both the princess’s untimely passing and the impermanence of earthly creations. Finally, in 1874, King Mindon, Bagyidaw’s younger brother, took on the immense task of restoring the Shin Bot Mal Pagoda to its former glory. Thanks to his efforts, the pagoda stands today much as it was originally envisioned. A beacon of white against the blue sky, a testament to love that endured even beyond death.
