Can you imagine a beach named for longing lovers? Sheung Sze Wan Second Beach, west of Clearwater Bay Country Park, carries just such a romantic name. “Sheung Sze Wan” translates to the longing between lovers separated. However, the history of Sheung Sze Wan Second Beach isn’t quite so romantic. It’s a story of pirates, not lovers. Sheung Sze Wan Second Beach and the nearby village share a history intertwined with pirate raids. Villagers tell stories passed down through generations of attacks on the bay. Their ancestors fought back. They piled rocks along the shore to prevent pirate ships from landing. This act of defense evolved into a ritual of offering thanks to the stones for protection. Later, the village’s defenses became more aggressive with the addition of a cannon, remnants of which can still be seen in the village today. Today, Sheung Sze Wan Second Beach is part of Clearwater Bay Country Park. It’s the larger of two beaches connected by a path. The beach boasts finer sand than its smaller neighbor, Clear Water Bay First Beach. You’ll find summer lifeguards, shark nets, changing rooms, showers, toilets, and barbeque areas. Looking for more activities? Sheung Sze Wan Second Beach is the place to be, offering a more vibrant atmosphere than the secluded First Beach. You can swim in the clear waters, relax on the sandy shore, or explore the hiking trails in the surrounding park. Feeling adventurous? Rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards and explore the nearby islands within the UNESCO Geopark.
