What secrets does this seemingly small island hold? This is Sheung Sha Chau. It is part of a group of four islets that make up Sha Chau. These include Tai Sha Chau, Ha Sha Chau, and Siu Sha Chau. Sha Chau sits off Lung Kwu Tan near Tuen Mun. It is separated by the Urmston Road waterway.
Sha Chau has a fascinating history. It once served as a shelter. British merchant ships carrying opium used it during the Qing era.
Today, Sheung Sha Chau plays a vital role in Hong Kong’s infrastructure. The Aviation Fuel Receipt Facility is located here. This facility handles the bulk intake of fuel for Hong Kong airport. Twin 6 kilometer submarine pipelines transport the fuel to Chek Lap Kok. Initially, Sheung Sha Chau was intended as a temporary location.
The island also contributes to conservation efforts. Since 1996, Sha Chau, along with Lung Kwu Chau and Pak Chau, has been part of the Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park. Since 1979, these islands have been listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a dolphin sanctuary. Chinese white dolphins call it home.
