Have you ever heard of a submarine mine depot? Shelly Bay, right here on the Miramar Peninsula, was once home to a bustling naval base. This small bay is steeped in military history. It was the site of a submarine mine base, a naval station, and an Airforce base. Imagine, for example, the soldiers working on the anti-submarine mines. Some were even prisoners of war from Parihaka. The area was also home to a bustling naval base. But Shelly Bay has a much older history, dating back to the 1820s and 1830s when Maori tribes settled the area. The Crown acquired the land during the Colonial period, but the deed was later found to be flawed, leading to a Treaty of Waitangi settlement in 2009. This settlement acknowledged injustices against the Taranaki Whanui iwi who were forced to relocate from the area. But Shelly Bay is also a haven for little blue penguins, who nest in burrows under the buildings. These beautiful creatures are a reminder of the bay’s natural beauty. Today, Shelly Bay is a popular destination for walkers, kayakers, and those who want to enjoy the stunning views. The area is also home to numerous art studios, a cafe, and several filming locations. This unique and captivating bay in Wellington’s harbour is a place where history and nature meet.
