Around 300 years ago, the Man clan of San Tin branched out from Chau Tau Tsuen. They established a new village, Shek Wu Wai. Shek Wu Wai is a relatively young village compared to other Man clan settlements in the San Tin area. The village is located south of the San Tin Highway. The highway acts as a dividing line between Shek Wu Wai and the primary Man clan villages like Yan Shau Wai and Fan Tin Tsuen. A key feature of Shek Wu Wai is its entrance gate. Rebuilt in 1965, this gate has two circular holes above the doorway. These holes serve a dual purpose. They are important for feng shui and also provide a practical vantage point for security. Inside the gate, you’ll find an Earth God shrine. Other shrines within Shek Wu Wai include a Pak Tai shrine and another Earth God shrine. In 1911, a census recorded Shek Wu Wai’s population as 56, with 37 males. More recently, in June 2022, the Town Planning Board rejected a substantial housing project proposed for Shek Wu Wai. The project, put forward by Sun Hung Kai Properties and Hongkong Land, envisioned 11,292 flats.
