Imagine whispers of a bygone era still clinging to these streets of Shek Tong Tsui. This area, now a blend of modern life and old-world charm, was once Hong Kong’s most vibrant red-light district.

Shek Tong Tsui earned its name from the stone ponds “shek tong” left by Hakka Chinese granite miners. A narrow peninsula jutted into the sea, resembling a beak or “tsui”. Hence, Shek Tong Tsui.

The transformation of Shek Tong Tsui began in 1904. The government relocated brothels from Sheung Wan to this then-undeveloped area. This move followed a devastating bubonic plague and fire in Tai Ping Shan.

Shek Tong Tsui flourished. It became a hub of entertainment and pleasure. This golden age peaked in the 1920s. Wealthy merchants from across East and Southeast Asia flocked here. They sought entertainment and luxury. Tales abound of extravagance. Super-rich men competed for favored prostitutes. They burned cash to fuel dessert making from midnight to dawn. One rich man tipped every staff member in a brothel with gold coins after marrying a popular prostitute. Shek Tong Tsui was a stage for glamour.

The area teemed with life. Four-story brothels housed around 60 women each. Hundreds of smaller establishments also existed. Forty high-end restaurants thrived. Numerous hotels and theaters added to the vibrancy. Prostitutes were fashion trendsetters. They bought imported clothing, silk stockings and jewelry. Some became celebrities. Newspapers covered their lives. The death of Fa Ying Hen, a celebrated prostitute, drew over a thousand people to her memorial service.

But the glory days were short-lived. In 1935, the government outlawed prostitution. Shek Tong Tsui’s red-light district vanished.

Today, Shek Tong Tsui bears little trace of its past. Hill Road, once the heart of the red-light district, is now a quiet street. Cafes and eateries line the road. The Hill Road Flyover is a modern icon. It connects Hong Kong University and the tram depot.

The film “Rouge” captured Shek Tong Tsui’s bygone era. The movie tells the story of Fleur. She is a ghost of a 1930s prostitute. She searches for her lover in 1980s Hong Kong. She lingers on Hill Road. She is frustrated by the transformed scenery.

In recent years, Shek Tong Tsui has seen further changes. The Instagram Pier, officially the Western District Public Cargo Working Area, became a sensation. People flocked to the pier for sunset views and unique photo opportunities. Netizens called it “Mirror of the Sky”. It was closed to the public in 2021.

Kennedy Town, adjacent to Shek Tong Tsui, has also undergone gentrification. New residential developments and trendy establishments have sprung up. The opening of the Kennedy Town MTR Station in 2014 brought increased attention to the area.

Yet, Shek Tong Tsui retains its charm. It is a blend of old and new. The winding alleys and old buildings whisper stories of the past. Explore hidden temples. Discover local noodle makers. Experience the unique atmosphere of this Hong Kong neighborhood.
