Beneath the dam of the Shek Pik Reservoir stands a place of confinement. This is Shek Pik Prison, a maximum-security institution in Hong Kong. It is located at 47 Shek Pik Reservoir Road on Lantau Island. Shek Pik Prison is more than just walls and bars. It’s a repository of stories, struggles, and the weight of justice.

Shek Pik Prison opened its doors in 1984. It was built to ease overcrowding at Stanley Prison. The construction cost around HK$135 million. Back then, it boasted high-tech security. A 160-camera video system kept watch. Infrared alarms guarded the perimeter. The prison even featured Hong Kong’s largest solar water heating system at the time.

Designed for maximum security, Shek Pik Prison originally held 466 inmates. Today, its official capacity is 426. It houses those serving medium to long sentences. Some inmates are sentenced to life imprisonment.

Beyond its imposing structure, Shek Pik Prison operates like a small city. Inmates participate in correctional industries. These include woodworking and laundry. The prison’s workshops are the largest among Hong Kong’s correctional facilities.

Shek Pik Prison has housed several notable individuals. Lam Kor-wan was a convicted serial killer. Political activists Edward Leung, Benny Tai, and Joshua Wong have also been inmates here. Nadeem Razaq, another convicted serial killer, died by suicide within its walls.

Imagine the atmosphere inside Shek Pik Prison. Guards monitor the closed-circuit television system. Wireless communication networks hum with activity. Inmates work in the workshops. The solar energy system quietly heats water. It is a place of strict routines and constant surveillance.

The location of Shek Pik Prison has its own history. Before the prison, villages dotted Shek Pik Valley. The Shek Pik Reservoir’s construction led to their demolition. Villagers were relocated to other parts of Lantau Island. Some moved to Tsuen Wan. The Hau Wong Temple, once a village focal point, now lies underwater.

Shek Pik Prison stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of crime. It is a place where lives are reshaped. Justice is served. The prison is a complex part of Hong Kong’s story.
