Shek Kok Tsui or Belcher Point as it is also known is a peninsula on Hong Kong Island. Its name literally means Stone Pond Mouth. It hints at the area’s early days. The true story of Shek Kok Tsui however unfolds in the early 20th century. In the 1900s Hong Kong’s brothels relocated here. They moved from Sheung Wan to this relatively undeveloped area. This transformed Shek Kok Tsui into a bustling red-light district.
Imagine the scene. Dozens of large brothels lined the streets each employing scores of women. Affluent Chinese flocked to Shek Kok Tsui for entertainment. Cantonese opera houses and restaurants thrived. It was a time of excess and glamour nicknamed tong sai fung yuet good times west of the pond.
This golden age inspired countless stories. The famous movie Rouge starring Anita Mui captured the essence of this era. It immortalized Shek Kok Tsui’s captivating and scandalous past.
This vibrant period however was short-lived. The Hong Kong Government banned prostitution in 1935. The area’s character changed drastically. Shek Kok Tsui transitioned from a center of illicit activity to a quiet residential neighborhood.
Even the Japanese occupation couldn’t completely erase Shek Kok Tsui’s unique history. During this time the Japanese military relocated Chinese brothels to the area. They renamed it Kuramae. Once again the area boomed this time serving the Japanese military.
After the war the area reverted to its original name. Urbanization continued. Today Shek Kok Tsui is a calmer place. Yet the whispers of its flamboyant past linger in the very stones. They are a testament to an unforgettable chapter in Hong Kong’s history.
