The Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Masjid opened its doors on Friday, October 11, 2013. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan inaugurated the mosque. He is the son of Dr. Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. The mosque’s construction was sponsored by Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Zayid Al Nahyan. He is the son of the United Arab Emirates ruler, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Located at Beaufond Lane in Mont Fleuri, the mosque provides a vital space for Muslim prayer and community activities. It supplements the existing mosque on Francis Rachel Street. It also enhances the smaller prayer hall at Plaisance. Imam Idriss Youssouf expressed the Muslim community’s joy and gratitude for the new masjid. He conveyed sincere thanks to the Seychelles government. He also thanked Ramson Construction, Muslim brothers and sisters and the UAE government.
The Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Masjid can accommodate around 750 worshippers. The mosque also features a center for Quran memorization. It was a donation from Sheikh Sultan to the Quran and Sunnah Association. This association sponsors nearly 2,000 Muslims. During the opening, Sultan Saeed Bilal welcomed visitors. He explained Islam and taught some prayers in Arabic.
