Founded with a vision to uplift and empower, Shaw Community Ministry stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Shaw neighborhood. Established in 1991 by the Potomac Association, United Church of Christ, Shaw Community Ministry emerged in response to the profound impact of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination. The civic unrest that followed underscored the urgent need for community support and social services.
Initially named Shaw Community Ministry, it was created to complement the Lincoln-Westmoreland affordable housing apartments. The Shaw neighborhood, south and east of the U Street corridor, poignantly reflects the cultural crossroads of Washington, D.C. This location has allowed Shaw Community Ministry to serve as a vital resource for low-income families. Many have called this historically Black neighborhood home for decades.
In 2015, Shaw Community Ministry updated its name to Shaw Community Center. This change reaffirmed the non-sectarian commitment to educational and social services. It also reflected enhanced capabilities in technology, arts education, literacy, vocational training, and direct employment to sustain families. The name “Center” aimed to foster a sense of belonging. Identity and location are closely intertwined here.
Shaw Community Center addresses the challenges of a rapidly gentrifying area. It empowers youth to participate in and benefit from the neighborhood’s growth. The center ensures they don’t feel disenfranchised or pushed out. Shaw Community Center provides holistic services to empower the community.
The organization supports residents of Lincoln-Westmoreland affordable housing and aids over 300 families. These families benefit from a range of educational and social initiatives. These encompass technology, literacy, the arts, vocational training, and direct employment.
Recognizing the pivotal role of arts and humanities, Shaw Community Center created a cultural repository. This celebrates Black heritage, fostering pride and belonging. This initiative blossomed into a comprehensive arts program. It integrates STEAM principles, weaving together the arts and sciences.
Shaw Community Center’s mission is to work together with the community. This includes children, youth, adults, and seniors. The aim is to enhance lives and expand opportunities. This happens through education, health and wellness, leadership, and youth development.
