How about a visit to the largest water treatment facility in Hong Kong? I am talking about Shatin Water Treatment Works. This is where the magic happens to keep our city hydrated.
Shatin Water Treatment Works is essential. It ensures that every tap delivers clean and safe water.
Originally commissioned in 1964, the South Works of Shatin Water Treatment Works had served for approximately 50 years. As time took its toll, the facility began to show its age. Maintaining operations became increasingly uneconomical. In response, a reprovisioning project was initiated. The goal was to replace outdated equipment with advanced water treatment technologies.
The reprovisioning aimed to enhance the effectiveness and capacity of water treatment. This involved introducing ozone treatment to remove impurities such as manganese and iron. Ozone also helps eliminate unpleasant tastes and odors. Deep bed biological filtration was implemented to remove ammonia. Shatin Water Treatment Works was also the first facility in Hong Kong to use ultra-violet disinfection. This inactivates microorganisms and further improves water quality.
The upgrade increased the South Works’ treatment capacity. It went from 360,000 cubic meters per day to an impressive 550,000 cubic meters per day. This expansion ensures that Shatin Water Treatment Works can meet the growing water demands. The demands arise from new housing developments in Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and Sha Tin District.
ATAL partnered with Chun Wo – Ming Hing for the in-situ reprovisioning. ATAL managed the design, build, testing, and commissioning. The electrical and mechanical works were also their responsibility. The project featured the latest technologies. These included lamellar sedimentation, two-stage filtration, and ozonation.
Shatin Water Treatment Works adopted an innovative design. It incorporated sustainable features. This optimized plant operation. The project has received numerous awards. These accolades recognize its excellence in construction, safety, and environmental management.
The project video of Shatin Water Treatment Works even won “Honors” in the 22nd Annual International QUESTAR Awards. This was under the category of Corporation: Stakeholder Communications.
The Water Supplies Department oversees the operation. They ensure a reliable water supply for the territory. The reprovisioning project significantly enhances their capabilities. It allows them to meet the evolving needs of Hong Kong.
So, next time you turn on the tap, remember the journey. Remember the advanced technologies and dedicated efforts at Shatin Water Treatment Works. It is a story of innovation and commitment to providing clean water for all.
