Slipping through time, let’s journey back to 1394. The Ming Dynasty, fresh from ousting the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty, was fortifying its coastal defenses. Right here, at Shan Tsai Tau, imagine the bustle of construction. This peak, Shan Tsai Tau, became part of a crucial defense system, a walled city known as Nantou. Nantou, meaning “Southern End,” guarded the Pearl River and the vital route to Guangzhou. Shan Tsai Tau watched as Nantou thrived, becoming a bustling hub on South China’s sea route. Centuries later, in the 15th century, Shan Tsai Tau may have even witnessed the legendary Admiral Zheng He and his fleet sail past. Legend has it, Zheng He faced peril near Nantou during his epic treasure voyages. He came ashore to pray for safe passage at the Tianhou Temple in Chiwan, not far from Shan Tsai Tau and Nantou. The story of Shan Tsai Tau and Nantou continued through the Ming and into the Qing Dynasty. In 1573, Shan Tsai Tau watched as thousands of families migrated to Nantou, solidifying its role as the administrative center of the newly established Xin’an County. However, the winds of change blew again with the arrival of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The nearby market town of Shenzhen eclipsed Nantou’s prominence. Shan Tsai Tau witnessed the slow decline of Nantou as the administrative center moved to Shenzhen in 1953. While Nantou’s importance faded, its history remained etched into the landscape. Today, remnants of the city walls and some Qing Dynasty buildings still stand. Here at Shan Tsai Tau, we overlook not just a peak, but a silent sentinel over centuries of change, prosperity, and decline.
