Established in 1956 Sham Shek Tsuen’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Nestled in the mountainous terrain of Lantau Island Sham Shek Tsuen wasn’t ideal for rice farming. Cheap imports from places like Australia and Thailand made it unprofitable. Many farmers switched to vegetables livestock and fruit.

The year 1958 marked a turning point. The government built a large irrigation ditch. New farmland was reclaimed along the mountains. This was crucial for Sham Shek Tsuen’s survival. The Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association (KAAA) played a vital role. Founded by the Kadoorie brothers the KAAA provided loans and agricultural support. They helped build houses storage tanks and irrigation channels. They even donated cement for the pier expansion. They provided seeds sows and chicks. The KAAA’s efforts were extraordinary. They also provided labor-saving automatic irrigation equipment. This significantly increased agricultural productivity and improved the villagers’ lives.

Sham Shek Tsuen became known for its diverse agricultural products. They grew white rice black glutinous rice and various vegetables like Chinese cabbage and gourds. Fruits like wampi lychees bananas and jackfruit thrived. The KAAA’s impact on Sham Shek Tsuen was immense. It’s a testament to their dedication and the villagers’ hard work. Sham Shek Tsuen boasts the largest number of surviving KAAA relics in northwestern Lantau. It stands as a living monument to Lantau Island’s agricultural past. The KAAA’s legacy continues to resonate in the community. The prosperity and contented life of the villagers is a direct result of their efforts. The story of Sham Shek Tsuen is a reminder of the power of community resilience and innovative agricultural practices.
