Doesn’t Sham Hang Lek sound like the beginning of an adventure? It is. We are about to explore a place with rugged relief. It shows marked variations in topography.
Sham Hang Lek is a peak in Hong Kong. This peak conforms geologically to the upland region of South China. The area around Sham Hang Lek is part of an upfold. This upfold formed about 150 million years ago. Lava poured into this structure. It created volcanic rocks. Later, a granitic dome intruded.
Hong Kong’s landscape is not all flat. It rises abruptly to heights. Some points reach above 2,950 feet. That’s over 900 meters. Ridges run from northeast to southwest. This pattern aligns with South China’s structure.
Tai Mo Shan is the highest peak. It reaches 3,140 feet. That is 957 meters. From there, the ridges extend to Lantau Island. Lantau Peak rises to 3,064 feet. Sunset Peak reaches 2,851 feet.
Moving southeast from Tai Mo Shan lies Kowloon Peak. It stands at 1,975 feet. That is 602 meters. There is a sharp drop to 650 feet at Devil’s Peak. Victoria Harbour is protected by mountains. Victoria Peak is to the west. It rises to 1,810 feet. Mount Parker is to the east. It reaches about 1,742 feet.
Lowlands are scarce in Hong Kong. They take up less than a fifth of the land. You can find extensive lowlands north of Tai Mo Shan. These are in the Yuen Long and Sheung Shui plains. The urban area around the harbor only covers about a tenth of the level area.
Rivers are not Hong Kong’s forte. The Sham Chun River is an exception. It forms the boundary between Guangdong and Hong Kong. It flows into Deep Bay. Most streams are small. They run perpendicular to the terrain.
Hong Kong’s soils are generally acidic. They have low fertility. Alluvial soils are an exception. You can find them in the Deep Bay area. The Pearl River estuary meets saline waters there. Sediments deposit to form mudflats. Paddy rice farming modifies these soils. Hill soils are common elsewhere. They are red-yellow podzolic and krasnozem. Under forests, these soils have rich topsoil. When exposed, they are thin and lack nutrients. Erosion is extensive under tropical conditions.
