The park’s name honors William Henry Seward. He served as the United States Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward is most famous for his role in the American purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867. At the time many mocked the purchase. It became known as “Seward’s Folly”.
Interestingly there is no statue of William Seward here. But there is a statue of his adopted daughter Olive Risley Seward. You can find it at a private residence. It is located at the corner of 6th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE. John Cavanaugh sculpted it in 1971.
