Built of tuff stones the Severinstorburg stands tall. It’s one of only four surviving city gate castles from Cologne’s medieval wall. Imagine this imposing structure a key part of a 9km long defense system. This impressive gate wasn’t just a defense it was a symbol. Twelve gates echoing Jerusalem’s walls a deliberate choice to represent a spiritual connection.

The Severinstorburg also known as Porta Severini in medieval times is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to Cologne’s powerful past. This city was the strongest fortified city north of the Alps. A significant strategic point the Severinstorburg guarded important southern routes towards Bonn. It also protected several monasteries enhancing its importance.

This wasn’t just a military structure. The Severinstorburg was a place of celebration and spectacle. High-ranking nobles princes princesses and even kings were greeted here. Think magnificent tournaments and joyous minnesang. In 1235 Princess Isabella of England wife of Emperor Frederick II was welcomed here. In 1327 an eight-day tournament was opened at the Severinstorburg by the future Emperor Louis IV.

But the Severinstorburg’s story extends beyond royal visits. There’s a local legend about the Schmitz-Backes a bakery near the gate. It played a role in a rather unusual form of punishment. Those avoiding the death penalty were forced to wear a wooden coat from the prison all the way to the bakery. Reaching the bakery meant they survived this ordeal. The Cologne saying Du bist noch nicht am Schmitz-Backes vorbei meaning you are not yet out of danger refers to this practice.

The Severinstorburg’s life continued even after the city walls were demolished in 1881. It housed a natural history museum then a hygiene museum. During the Nazi era it served as a home for the Hitler Youth. Today it is a community center a place for events and celebrations. The Reiter-Korps Jan von Werth even reenacts a legend about Jan von Werth here every year. Excavations in 2005 revealed the foundations of a 15th-century fortification. The Bollwerk built to protect the Severinstorburg from artillery fire now aims to be reconstructed.

The Severinstorburg is more than just a historical landmark. It is a living testament to Cologne’s rich history. A place where the past and present intertwine. Its imposing presence its role in pivotal historical events and its enduring legacy make it a truly unforgettable sight. It continues to play its part even as a popular wedding venue. So next time you’re in Cologne don’t miss a chance to experience the magnificent Severinstorburg.
