Senju sakuragi

Deep in the heart of Tokyo, nestled within Adachi City, lies Senju sakuragi. Senju sakuragi isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a place steeped in history, a testament to Tokyo’s ever-evolving landscape. Once, the mighty Senju Thermal Power Station dominated this area. From 1926 to 1963, this power plant hummed with activity, its four towering smokestacks reaching towards the sky. Locals nicknamed these smokestacks the “Ghost Chimneys.” These chimneys earned their spooky moniker for two reasons. First, the power station primarily served as a reserve, rarely operating at full capacity. The infrequent plumes of smoke rising from the chimneys resembled ghostly apparitions. Adding to the eerie atmosphere, the location was sometimes mistaken for a crematorium. The second reason behind the nickname lay in an optical illusion. Depending on the viewing angle, the number of chimneys seemed to shift and change. Sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes three, and occasionally all four would be visible. This visual trickery, coupled with the infrequent smoke, solidified the “Ghost Chimneys” in local lore. The Senju Thermal Power Station played a crucial role during World War II. Initially designed with a capacity of 25,000 kW, continuous expansions eventually boosted its output to 75,000 kW. The power plant’s location on the banks of the Sumida River was strategically chosen. This allowed for efficient transportation of coal fuel by raft from the Port of Tokyo. Even today, echoes of this industrial past linger in Senju sakuragi. Although the power plant was demolished in 1964, its memory lives on. The site now houses a raw materials center and the Tokyo Electric Power Adachi operations center. And while the Ghost Chimneys are gone, their image remains, preserved in movies, books, anime, and manga. They stand as a reminder of Senju sakuragi’s industrial heritage, a ghostly presence in the heart of Tokyo.
